KCK Community
The Friends of the Kaw and the Kansas Riverkeeper have initiated a project in Eastern Kansas City Kansas to promote safe use of the Kansas River and develop new ways to include the community in the Kansas River Inventory project.
We are in the process of creating a base map that includes the EPA permitted facilities in the area-- but there are so many sources of air, land and water pollutant discharges that we can't fit them all on a single map (you can see the first page below).

Map Legend: The coffee cup icon is a locally famous coffee shop, the Q Brew, where FOK members meet with local community leaders; the yellow icons are the locations of coal-fired power plants; the blue icons are water treatment plants; all the purple markers are permitted facilities which you can click on to get more information; and the red line denotes the community and the affected stretch of the Kaw.
Friends of the Kaw presented a session at the Breaking the Silence Conference at the Reardon Center, 520 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas on January 8 & 9. Pictured are Richard Mabion, Conference Organizer; Earl Hatley, the Grand Riverkeeper and Laura Calwell, Kansas Riverkeeper. Our presentation was on Saturday, January 9 from 10:00 to 11:45am and featured our special guest, Earl Hatley, the Grand Riverkeeper, from Vinita, OK. The Grand River starts in central Kansas as the Neosho River. Our presentation focused on the impact of coal burning power plants to Kansas rivers and the air we breathe. Earl Hatley also focused on Environmental Justice and health issues associated with coal burning power plants.
